The Porchlight Club
Terms of membership & liability waiver
Written in plain English, because a page nobody can read protects nobody. This is what the Club does, what it does not do, and what each of us is responsible for.
The short version
Keep your conversations here, where they are moderated. If you choose to share private details or move a friendship off the Club, that is completely your decision - and the Club cannot be held responsible for what follows, including financial harm.
1. Who may be a member
The Porchlight Club is a women-only club for friendship, open to women 55 and over. When you join, you confirm that you are a woman, that you are at least 55, and that you are here for platonic friendship - not dating, not romance, and not business.
We may close an account, without a refund of dues already used, if a member misrepresents who she is or uses the Club to pursue dating, sales, fundraising, or anything else the Community Rules forbid.
2. What the Club provides
We provide a place to write letters, join rooms, take classes, and be introduced to other Club members. We moderate rooms, review reports, and remove members who break the rules.
We do not run background checks on members, and we do not verify that a member is who she says she is unless she completes optional ID verification. A verified badge means an identity document was checked - it is not a character reference and it is not a guarantee of anything.
3. Keep your conversations on the Club
We strongly recommend that all of your communication with other members stays inside The Porchlight Club. Letters written here are moderated, reportable, and traceable. That is what keeps you protected.
Because of that, our letters gently block phone numbers, street addresses, and email addresses. This is not us being difficult - it is the single most effective thing we can do to keep members safe.
4. Sharing private details is your choice - and your risk
You are an adult and the decision is yours. If you choose to share your phone number, home address, email address, social media, financial information, or any other private detail with another member - or to move a friendship to text, email, another app, or a meeting in person - you do so entirely at your own risk and on your own judgment.
Once a conversation leaves The Porchlight Club, we cannot see it, moderate it, or help with it. We are not responsible for anything that happens off the Club, and we are not responsible for what another member does with information you chose to give her.
5. Liability waiver
By joining, you agree that The Porchlight Club, Inc., its owners, staff, moderators, and volunteers are not liable for any loss, injury, distress, or damage arising from your membership, including but not limited to:
- Financial harm, fraud, scams, theft, or money you send or lend to another member or anyone she introduces you to.
- The conduct, honesty, statements, or promises of any member or any other person you meet through the Club.
- Anything that happens in communication or meetings that take place off the Club - by phone, text, email, another app, mail, or in person.
- Emotional distress, disappointment, or harm to a relationship arising from a friendship formed here.
- Loss of access, interruptions, or content that is removed or lost.
6. What you agree to do
Treat other members with kindness. Never ask a member for money, loans, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or investment help, and never send any of those to a member. Report anything that feels wrong - you will never be scolded for reporting.
If someone asks you for money, stop writing and report her. That single habit prevents nearly every serious harm we see anywhere online.
7. Membership dues and cancellation
Club Plus dues are $19 a month or $180 a year. You can cancel at any time and keep your access until the end of the period you have paid for. Dues already used are not refunded, and free membership stays free.
8. Your information
We never sell member data. Signed-out visitors cannot see real member profiles. Your birth year and email address are never shown to other members. You can edit or delete your profile at any time.
9. Changes and questions
If we make a meaningful change to these terms, we will tell members in plain language before it takes effect. If any part of these terms cannot be enforced where you live, the rest still stands.
If anything here is unclear, please write to us. You are not bothering us.
We will keep the porch light on, and we will keep it honest.
